PYAP Imus Chapter Members in Anabu 2C Elect New Officers for 2010

Members of PYAP Imus Chapter in Anabu 2C elected new set of officers for their barangay for the year 2010. Ms Tina Viegan, RSW and Mr. Juriel Fabito, Advisers of PYAP Imus Chapter together with Youth Coordinator Mr Cris Diaz facilitated the election.

Before the election, Ms. Viegan gave a short talk on the objectives of PYAP Imus Chapter, Mr. Fabito on the role of the Officers, and Mr. Cris Diaz on the projects of the organization for 2010.

PYAP Imus Chapter Holds First Fellowship for 2010

PYAP Imus Chapter held its first Fellowship of PYAPians for 2010 on January 16, 2009 at Villa Nicasia in Brgy Tanzang Luma 3, Imus, Cavite. More than 200 PYPians trooped to the venue as early as 3PM to meet other PYAPians from various barangays and enjoy the games and party.

The event was graced by Mayor Manny Maliksi, Vice-Mayor Mandy Ilano, Coun Jem Yulo, Mr. Dennis Lacson, CDAO Unit Head/PYAP Adviser Ms Tina Viegan, RSW and Mr. Juriel Fabito/ PYAP Adviser.

The Officers and Members of PYAP Imus Chapter attended the 2009 Advent
Recollection organized by PYAP Imus Chapter Advisers with a theme "Experiencing the Presence of God" on December 5, 2009 at SB Hall, Imus Municipal Hall, Imus, Cavite. The recollection was facilitated by Bro. Bal Ronato and Mr. Juriel Fabito, PYAP Advisers.

The first part of the recollection focused on self-knowledge using the "Johari Window" as a tool. The Johari Window is a model for self-awareness, Personal development, Group development and Understanding relationship.

Bro. Bal Ronato, O.Carm discussed "Experiencing God in my Relationship with Others" on the second half of the recollection. He used Psalm 139 to describe God's infinite love and care.

PYAP Imus Chapter Congratulates Efren Penaflorida

The Officers, members and advisers of PYAP Imus Chapter congratulate Efren Penaflorida who has been awarded the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year.

MANILA – For bringing education to poor Filipino children through his “Kariton Klassroom,” Filipino Efren Peñaflorida has been awarded the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year at the conclusion of "CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute" at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday night.

According to CNN Web site, Peñaflorida has been selected after getting the highest number of online votes. More than 2.75 million votes were cast for 7 weeks.

He bested nine other contenders from different countries. Hollywood star Eva Mendes presented the award to him.

The Filipino received $100,000 to continue his work with his group, Dynamic Teen Company, according to CNN. The $100,000 cash prize is on top of the $25,000 he got after his name was included on the top 10 CNN Heroes.

In his acceptance speech delivered before 3,000 people, Peñaflorida encouraged the crowd to unleash the “hero in you.”

"Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry," Peñaflorida said. "Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.”

He also urged them to “serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve.”
“As I always tell to my co-volunteers ... you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be," he added.

During the gala night, the top 10 CNN Heroes, chosen by a blue-ribbon panel from an initial pool of more than 9,000 viewer nominations, were each honored with a documentary tribute and introduced by a celebrity presenter, according to the Web site. Each of the top 10 Heroes received $25,000.

CNN reported that presenters included Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Neil Patrick Harris, Pierce Brosnan, Dwayne Johnson, Mendes, Randy Jackson, Greg Kinnear, George Lopez and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Grammy Award-winning artist Carrie Underwood, R&B crooner Maxwell and British pop sensation Leona Lewis performed during the gala event.

The event will be broadcast on Thanksgiving, November 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the global networks of CNN.

‘Kariton Klassroom’

Penaflorida first came to the public's consciousness when his group, the Dynamic Teen Company, won the Bayaning Pilipino award for its heroic work in bringing education to poor children in Cavite.

The group later began the “Kariton Klassroom,” which is a mobile classroom that brings around all their teaching materials to the different areas they service.

Since 1997, more than 10,000 volunteers are now helping in educating more than 1,500 kids in depressed areas in Cavite.

Because of this campaign, Peñaflorida was included on CNN’s list of heroes for this year.
'Start within themselves'

Prior to the announcement of winners Saturday night, Peñaflorida was interviewed by ABS-CBN North America News Bureau.

During the interview, he said, if Filipinos wanted to see change, they should start within themselves.

“Kasi hindi naman po magagawa ng isang tao lang ang pagbabagong inaasam natin sa bayan natin. Iyong pagbabago kasi magsisimula iyan sa sarili natin. So kung gusto nating baguhin ang country natin, mag-i-start iyon sa puso natin. And then collectively, iyong pagbabago na iyon ay talagang magiging malaki,” he said.

And now that he is the recipient of the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year award, more poor and uneducated Filipino children will benefit from his award.

"Iyong 90% cash grant mapupunta sa Dynamic Teen Company. Iyong 10% sa church…. Nothing for me,” he said.

He said he was there as a representative of the children and the volunteers he works with.
“Nandito po ako para i-represent ang mga bata, iyong mga dedicated volunteers, iyong mentor ko, iyong selfless and hardworking Filipinos,” said Peñaflorida.

Peñaflorida may be a star to many, but for the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, the real heroes are the volunteers.

“Personal hero ko is iyong mga dedicated volunteers na kasama ko sa Dynamic Teen Company at sa Club 8586 na walang sawang tumutulong at sumusoporta sa amin. Of course ang Panginoon, ang Diyos, na talagang nagdala sa akin dito at Siyang dahilan bakit ako nandito rin." –

5th Asian Youth Day launched in Imus, Cavite

IMUS, Cavite – An estimated 2,000 youth ministers, leaders, bishops and clergy from all over Asia trooped here Friday, November 20, 2009, for the celebration of the 5th Youth Day that will last until November 27.

Dubbed as "Young Asians: Come together, Share the Word and Live the Eucharist", Bishop Rolando Tirona said the event is meant to challenge participants to the true eucharist of transformation.

The Asian Youth Day (AYD) is a gathering of young Catholics from the four sub–regions of Asia: South Asia, East Asia, South East Asia and Central Asia.

Fr. Tirona said the fiesta’s objectives are to renew ones faith in and love for the Word of God and the Eucharist; to celebrate youthfully the Word and the Eucharist in our contexts, cultures and communities and to become agents of renewal by living out the Word and the Eucharist in our realities of Asia .

The eight-day event has two parts: first, the Days in the Diocese where the delegates will be introduced to and immersed in Filipino culture by staying in ten dioceses/parishes surrounding the Diocese of Imus.

Subsequently, the AYD Proper where many activities such as plenary sessions on the Word and the Eucharist, sub-regional reflections and deepening experiences, and workshops and liturgies that will be held at the Diocese of Imus.

The opening on November 23 and the closing on November 27 are open to the public. The former will be held in front of Imus Cathedral at 3 p.m. while the latter will be held at the Rogationist College in Silang, Cavite at 10:30 a.m.

Amidst the widespread stories of gloom and doom in the global scene including Asia, Tirona said the youth of Asia will come together to find strength and hope in the Word of God and draw new life in the Holy Eucharist.
Moreover, the youth of Asia will be engaged in telling the story of a God of compassion and mercy. A God who topples the proud and the haughty and lifts up the lowly.

Fr. Tirona said the diocese of Cavite will be hosting the fiesta to be led by Bishop Luis Antonio Tagle.

Inspired by Jesus who fed the multitude and the Jesus who revealed himself as the food for everlasting life, the youth of Asia will appeal and challenge governments and churches to provide food for the countless poor, hungry and malnourished youth and children, Fr. Tirona said.

Likewise, this festive event highlights the timeless Asian family and cultural values of sharing a meal, of story telling, of respect and learning from the elders, he said.

Reverend Joel Z. Baylon, chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission of Youth, said half of the delegates will be composed of the youths in the Philippines while the other 1000 delegates will come from the other Asian countries.
