100 years of Father's Day

MANILA, Philippines - The first Father's Day was celebrated 100 hundred years ago, on June 19, 1910 to be exact.

The special day for dads held every 3rd Sunday of June was made after mothers had their own Mother's Day (see story here).

It's a special day to celebrate fatherhood and male parenting.

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington gets the credit for lobbying for the declaration of a Father's Day, asking for the support of pastors and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The association's members wore roses on their lapels on the first Father's Day in 1910 to honor their fathers.

Although Father's Day was celebrated since then, it was only officially recognized in 1966 when US President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as a day to honor fathers. In 1972, this proclamation was made into a law under US President Richard Nixon's watch.
